Biblical Words for Love Activity

Discover the profound meanings behind 'love' in the New Testament with the 'Biblical Words for Love Activity Guide.' As you study how the translators decided on different English words in the Bible, a major example of difficulty in translation is the English word "love." In English, we can use this word in many ways "I love my mom," "I love pizza," "I love my best friend." However, in Greek, they had several different words for love, which each have their own meaning.

In this activity, students will read about translating the Bible and languages used. Then, they will read about the four major Greek words for the word 'love': Eros (sexual love), Storge (family love), Philia (brotherly love) and Agape (unconditional love).

Then, they will read 15 different Bible verses and decide which of these Greek words it is referring to. For example, John 3:16 is an example of God's unconditional love, therefore it would be Agape. There are 11 New Testament verses and 4 Old Testament verses (while the Old Testament wasn't written in Greek, you can still get an idea of the kind of love that was portrayed in the verses).
