Indiana Dunes National Park is full of immense sand dunes which really help us to understand more about the ice age and the Great Lakes.

In this lab activity, students will read about Indiana Dunes, including a brief history and location, the formation of the dunes by glaciers, evidence of glaciers and glacial movement and the Great Lakes.

Then, they will conduct an experiment that demonstrates what happens during glacial movement by sliding a piece of ice across a pan with flour in it. Finally, they will answer several questions about what they learned.

To do this activity, each group/individual will need:

  • Copy of the student packet (INCLUDED)

  • Pencil

  • Rectangular baking pan

  • Flour (enough to fill the pan halfway)

  • Water

  • Small styrofoam bowl

  • Freezer
