Immerse your students in the wonders of Coastal Redwood trees with the Redwood National Park Scatter Plot Activity! This engaging, educational activity takes students on a journey through the majestic Redwood National Park, where they will read fascinating facts about these incredible trees and practice their data skills by creating a scatter plot. Perfect for in-class exercises or homework assignments, this activity not only improves students' graphing abilities but also enhances their understanding of nature. Suitable for various grade levels, this activity is a must-have for teachers aiming to combine science and math in an exciting way. This educational resource will keep your students captivated and eager to learn.
Redwood National Park is home to the tallest trees in the entire world! The very tallest is named Hyperion and it stretches 380 feet into the sky! Scientists study these trees by taking measurements of the diameter of the tree (at a certain height) and by measuring the height. These two measurements are correlated. In this activity, students will see how they influence each other when they make a Scatter Plot Graph.
First, students will read a page about the Redwood Trees and how scientists study them along with several other kinds of trees that live in the temperate rainforest. Then, students will use the data that was recorded on a table in their packets to create a scatter plot.
I have provided several teacher tips (including how to best set up the graphs) so you can show the students how to do it, or you can allow them to figure it out how to set up the graphs on their own.
Then, students will use what they learned, along with the table and their new scatter plot graph to answer 10 analysis questions about the graph.
