Sequoia National Park is home to some of the largest living things on earth: the Giant Sequoia Tree. These trees are estimated to live for thousands of years! But how do we know that? There are several methods that we can use to estimate the lives of trees including Tree Rings and Tree Core Samples.
In this activity, students will read about both of these methods and then they will put what they learned into practice by looking at several tree ring samples and answering questions about them. Then, they will cut out several tree core samples and they will try to put them in order of when the trees were planted. Then, they will answer questions about those samples.

"Loved this resource! Very easy for students to understand with super information. Kids loved looking at the tree rings and figuring out what the tree's history." Rebecca C.
"This resource was a great introduction to tree ring dating and helped build my students' capacity to think like historians. When covering World History, specifically prehistory and ancient civilizations, students sometimes don't quite comprehend how artifacts are "dated" and how archaeologists and anthropologists learn to make perfect assumptions about an object is age. Using the Tree Ring dating method provides a hands-on approach for students, especially when you can bring ina pucks of different trees from the local area and challenge students to date the trees in a real-world, tangible exercise!" Caleb C.
"This resource was fun for the students to use. We have been learning about different landforms and National Parks." Amy H.
