The Scientific Method: Cube Lab

At the beginning of the school year, it's important to teach our science classes about the nature of science and the scientific method. This lab allows students to walk through the scientific method in a fun and interesting way as they try to figure out the mystery of what is on the bottom of a cube!

First, you will create a cube (all directions (with pictures) and templates are provided in this resource). This cube has information on it, including names of animals and numbers.

Then, students will walk through the scientific process:

1. Observe: Without touching the cube, students will observe and record all information that they see on the cube.

2. Ask: Students will ask the question: "What is on the bottom of the cube?"

3. Hypothesize: Using the information they gathered, they will hypothesize what is on the bottom of the cube (there is a way for them to figure out the pattern and know what's on the bottom).

4. Test: Students will write down a test on how to figure out what is on the bottom.

5. Analyze: Students will conduct their test, see what is on the bottom and will record the answer. Finally, students will answer questions about what they learned.

There are also teacher directions on how to facilitate this lab and tips on how to make it go well.

My students love this activity! They get so excited when they figure out how the different sides connect and how to figure out the answer.

To do this activity you will need:

• Pencil

• Copy of Cube Lab Packet for each student (INCLUDED)

• One copy of each side of the cube (INCLUDED)

• Scissors and glue (for you to assemble the cube)
